چکیده

SIRTF requires detector arrays with extremely high sensitivity, limited only by the background irradiance. Especially critical is the near infrared spectral region around 3 μm, where the detector current due to the zodiacal background is a minimum. IRAC has two near infrared detector channels centered at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. We have developed InSb arrays for these channels that operate with dark currents of <0.2 e/s and multiply-sampled noise of ~7 e at 200s exposure. With these specifications the zodiacal background limited requirement has been easily met. In addition, the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of the InSb devices exceeds 90% over the IRAC wavelength range, they are radiation hard, and they exhibit excellent photometric accuracy and stability. Residual images have been minimized. The Raytheon 256 x 256 InSb arrays incorporate a specially developed (for SIRTF) multiplexer and high-grade InSb material.

The Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF)

The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) contains three focal plane instruments, one of which is the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). IRAC is a four-channel camera that provides simultaneous 5.12 × 5.12 arcmin images at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8 microns. The pixel size is 1.2 arcsec in all bands. Two adjacent fields of view in the SIRTF focal plane are viewed by the four channels in pairs (3.6 and...

Spitzer Space Telescope: Dark Current and Total Noise Prediction for InSb Detector Arrays in the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) for the Post-Cryogen Era

During the expected 5+ years of operation, the Spitzer Space Telescope is and will continue to produce outstanding infrared images and spectra, and greatly further scientific understanding of our universe. The Spitzer Space Telescope’s instruments are cryogenically cooled to achieve low dark current and low noise. After the cryogens are exhausted, the Spitzer Space Telescope will only be cooled...

The detection and photometric redshift determination of distant galaxies using SIRTF ’s Infrared Array Camera

We investigate the ability of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility ’s Infrared Array Camera to detect distant (z ∼ 3) galaxies and measure their photometric redshifts. Our analysis shows that changing the original long wavelength filter specifications provides significant improvements in performance in this and other areas. Subject headings: cosmology: early universe — galaxies: evolution — in...

Calibrating Array Detectors

The development of sensitive large format imaging arrays for the infrared promises to provide revolutionary capabilities for space astronomy. For example, the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on SIRTF will use four 256× 256 arrays to provide background limited high spatial resolution images of the sky in the 3 to 8 μm spectral region. In order to reach the performance limits possible with this gene...

Far-Infrared and Submillimeter Observations of High Redshift Galaxies

Observations at far-infrared and submillimeter wavelengths promise to revolutionize the study of high redshift galaxies and AGN by providing a unique probe of the conditions within heavily extinguished regions of star formation and nuclear activity. Observational capabilities in this spectral region will expand greatly in the next decade as new observatories are developed both in space and on t...
